Inward Witness as Manifestation of God’s Voice

How do you hear the voice of the one who is invisible and rarely uses the audible words to communicate? Yes, He does speak in an audible voice but very rarely. So how do we hear somebody who doesn’t use audible voices that often? How can we the visible understand the voice of the invisible? How can we, the created, understand the language of the Creator? How do we hear the voice of one who is grand in wisdom and majestic in power beyond all our comprehension? So how can we comprehend his voice? How can we distinguish his voice from the so many other voices that compete for our ears and for our attention? And how can the infinite and unlimited God speak to finite human beings in a language that they can understand. That has always been the challenge. When we engage the voice of God, the challenge is always that we are too limited to understand the unlimited; and too finite to understand the infinite. But still God comes down and simplifies Himself to speak in a language that we can understand. We have so far spoken about a number of the manifestations of the voice of God. Let us consider another manifestation of His voice.

Dr Kenneth E. Hagin stated that the primary way in which God leads His children is by the inward witness. Now in the New Testament He does not use the audible voice as frequently as He uses the inward witness. If Kenneth Hagin is correct, then we need to understand this fundamental way in which God speaks to His children. Oswald Chambers a preacher of old had this to say: “The voice of the spirit of God is as gentle as a summer breeze, so gentle that unless you are living in complete fellowship and oneness with God, you will never hear it. The voice is so gentle, you man never hear it.” He wasn’t speaking about the audible voice. He was speaking about the inward witness. And Charles Spurgeon a mighty pulpiteer had this to say:- “The voice of God is the secret voice, unheard by any other ear which our own ear, opened by the spirit of God, recognises with joy.”

John 14:26:

But when the Father sends the Counselor as my representative—and by the Counselor I mean the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I myself have told you. (NLT)

Christ is saying here that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. And He teaches us by the inward witness that is through the voice of the human spirit. He says he will bring to remembrance. He will bring to recall the things that I, Jesus, have taught you. The Holy Spirit will use so many methods to speak to you, but one of the fundamental ways that he gets through to you is when he speaks by the inward witness, when he whispers into your ear, when he whispers into your spirit, when he communicates spirit to spirit, when suddenly things you didn’t know you suddenly know. You know many times you have read and studied the bible and suddenly a scripture just leaps into your spirit and you say where did I get that from? You didn’t hear an audible voice, but suddenly it starts ringing inside you, it’s the Holy Spirit reminding you of the things that he taught you. But he can only remind you of the things that you have been taught. If you have not studied your bible, if you have not spent time fellowshipping with God then he will have nothing to remind you of. That is the inward witness. So the Holy Spirit teaches you spirit to spirit and he teaches you all things. When you suddenly say I have just gotten a revelation this scripture has exploded on me and suddenly you know what it means; that is the working of the inward witness. That is the Holy Spirit communicating with your spirit. And that is the most fundamental way in which he speaks to you. Some people have called it the still small voice of God. It’s a summer breeze somebody said. So if you are too busy and in hurry, you are the microwave kind of Christian that says “God speak now quickly, or forever hold your peace. Lord what you do, do quickly because if you don’t do it then I am out of here”, then you will never hear the voice of the inward witness.

John 16:13-15:

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me.  All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me. (NLT)

How does he guide you? Not by shouting but by his spirit witnessing to your spirit, his spirit whispering to your spirit and he begins to guide you. Suddenly you say “I just felt I had to do this but I didn’t know what it meant.” Once you have obeyed that something, things happen in such a way that in retrospect you see the wisdom of that decision because He is guiding you spirit to spirit. He lays thoughts, ideas and concepts into your spirit, and you know beyond a shadow of doubt that you didn’t create them. This didn’t come from you. Of course it came from somewhere, and that is the Holy Spirit depositing into your spirit. That is the inward witness we are talking about. You know sometimes people say I have a premonition, I have an intuition, I just have a sense, I just feel that something is going to happen and it happened exactly as I felt it, that is the inward witness, that is the Holy spirit giving you a preview of forthcoming attractions. And every child of God can train himself to hear that voice of the spirit. But God speaks to your regenerated spirit. Remember the bible says, when it talks about the spirits of people, it speaks of the unregenerate spirit: – somebody who is a natural man and not born again, the bible says they cannot discern the things of the spirit of God. Then it speaks about the carnal Christian: – this is the one who is born again but lives by the flesh, who lives by the principles of this world, who is not submitted to the word of God, who is not sensitive to what the word of God says; but the one whose mind is renewed they become the spiritual Christian. They are the regenerate soul and their spirit is active, it’s sensitive, it hears what the spirit of God says. And the reason you need a sensitive spirit is that he doesn’t shout. This is not the kind of supernatural voice where you say it grabbed my attention. It’s just a whisper. You may even disregard it. You may think oh it’s just me; of course it’s you because He is speaking to your spirit and it is the voice of your spirit that you begin to hear. Who did you want it to be? Of course it’s you. So you can easily disregard it and say oh my God I just wished I had done it. How many times have you heard people say, you know, I just knew it inside me, there is no rational explanation, I just knew that I knew that I knew that this is what I needed to do. But somehow I didn’t get to do it and I missed an opportunity. You missed the voice of God, because you are waiting for the thunder and the lightning. You missed the supernatural while waiting for the spectacular. You know when the bible talks about the still small voice that the prophet heard; it says there was thunder, there was lightning, there was a whirlwind, but God was not in it, but in the quiet, in a still small voice, God spoke. But the problem we have as Christians is we are so enamoured with the spectacular. If God doesn’t come with drums, thunder and roar and say “My Son this is your father, I love you so much, I have just come to reveal the hidden things” then we are not ready to listen. Sometimes He will do that but it is very rare. To most of us, he will speak through the inward witness. So you need to train yourself to hear that voice. You need to train yourself by renewing your mind with the word of God so that when he speaks to you, you will hear. You know the Spirit speaks to spirit. So the Holy Spirit communicates with your spirit. You get to hear the voice of the spirit speaking to you which others call your conscience. Have you ever had a feeling inside you that says you are doing this but this is not the thing to do? And sometimes you disregard that voice. It’s God who is warning you. And God is trying to guide you into truth. But if you persist, suddenly that voice is quiet. It will insist for a while, and then suddenly as you persist and continue disregarding it, your conscience becomes seared and you don’t hear that voice anymore. Now you are on your own and the thing you feared begins to happen because you have just missed the manifestation of the voice of God. The inward witness may be a word that is just planted in your spirit; it’s quickened in your spirit. Some people will say you know I just had this scripture planted in me, and I don’t even know what it says. I had to rush and open my bible to find it, but I felt that God was saying something and when I opened it was the key to what I needed. Sometimes he may just plant a person’s name in your spirit and you begin to pray for that person.
