1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.
2 But now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he made the universe and everything in it.
3 The Son reflects God’s own glory, and everything about him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command. After he died to cleanse us from the stain of sin, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God of heaven.
Now the bible says here that God spoke in different ways and in different manners to our fathers and we conclude that God speaks in different manners, he doesn’t speak in one way. He is not monotonous. He is manifold. He is diverse, he is unique, he speaks to each one of us differently, and he uses different methods to speak to us at different times. So we need to be able to learn the different ways in which God speaks to us. But he says in these days he has spoken to us through his son Jesus Christ. So the voice of God has become flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. In other words we can put it this way: every voice that claims to be the voice of God should demonstrate the character and spirit of Christ. If any voice that speaks to you does not reflect the person and the character of Christ then it’s a questionable voice. That is the first way to distinguish any voice that speaks to you: does it reflect the character of Christ because in these last days, God speaks to us through Jesus Christ. So anything that is contrary to what Jesus says or contrary to the character and the person and the spirit of Christ tells you that it’s not the voice of God.
Job 33:14-16 KJV
14For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
We see in this scripture that God speaks in dreams, he speaks in visions and when people are asleep he seals their instruction. This confirms that God has a variety of ways of speaking to us. Or put another way there are various manifestations and expressions of God’s voice.
Isaiah 30:20-21 KJV
20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
God is saying here, even when things are hard he will bring you to a place where you hear his voice, you may be directionless and clueless in the dark asking yourself how to navigate. One of the ways that God speaks to you is that there is a quiet voice that speaks to you and says this is the way, walk in it. So it’s one of the ways that God whispers into your ear and begins to direct you saying this is where I want you to walk and you begin to have guidance and direction from God.
- God speaks because he is relational. He expects us to hear and know His voice.
- There are various manifestations of God’s voice. He speaks to us in different ways.
- Every form of God’s voice should always reflect the character, spirit and person of Jesus Christ to be authentic.
